Licensing

Truetask is licensed software with a one-time purchase model — no recurring subscriptions, no per-seat fees. Each installation requires a valid license key to operate beyond the trial period.

Visit the Client Portal to start a free trial, purchase a license, or manage your existing licenses.

How licensing works

Truetask uses a one-time purchase model. When you buy a license:

  • You receive a trial license via email when your organization is created, or a permanent license after purchase
  • The license is permanent — you own it forever
  • The license is locked to the major version you purchased (e.g., v1.x)
  • You get an upgrade grace period (typically one year) that entitles you to all updates within that window

After the grace period expires, you can:

  • Continue using your current version indefinitely — it's yours, no expiration
  • Purchase a new license at a reduced upgrade price to unlock the next version and a new grace period

The application runs fully offline after activation — no license server, no phone-home, no internet connection required during normal operation.

Trial period

After installation, you have 3 days to enter a license key. When you create your organization on the Client Portal, you automatically receive a 30-day trial license with full functionality.

If you need more time to evaluate, contact support at truetask.io to request a trial extension.

Activating your license

License keys are delivered via email — a trial key on signup, and a permanent key after purchase.

To activate:

  1. Log in to Truetask as an admin
  2. Go to Settings > License
  3. Paste the license key text
  4. Save

The license takes effect immediately. No restart required.

Lost your license key?

Check the email associated with your Truetask account. If you can't find it, contact support at truetask.io for a reissue.

Client Portal

The Client Portal at portal.truetask.dev is where you download releases and updates. Your portal credentials (email and password) were sent alongside your license key.

The portal is used to:

  • Download the application installer
  • Check for and download updates (within your grace period)
  • View release notes and changelogs
  • Manage your account password

Updates and the grace period

Your license includes an upgrade grace period from the date of purchase. During this window:

  • All updates are available to you through the portal and update script
  • Bug fixes, improvements, and new features within your major version are included

After the grace period ends:

  • Your current installation continues working permanently
  • New releases are no longer available for download
  • You can renew at a reduced price to unlock updates and extend the grace period

Credential management

During installation

The installer prompts for your portal email and password. You can optionally save them to config.ini for future updates:

WARNING

Credentials are stored in plain text in config.ini. Only save them if all users with access to the server are trusted. You can remove these lines at any time — the update script will prompt for credentials when needed.

Changing your portal password

Log in at portal.truetask.dev and update your password through the account settings. You can also use the Forgot Password link on the login page to reset it via email.

If you have credentials saved in config.ini, update them there as well.
